2011 - Week 14 In Review

Bit by bit, I feel like I'm finally getting my life back on track after the month of illness.  I spent this week catching up on things at work, while still attending to nutrition and exercise.  Most notably, I got some answers about my kidneys and feel like I finally know what I can do to make sure I'm taking care of myself while still being careful of my kidneys.

Exercise:  I'm getting there!  I got my 6 days of exercise in this week - 5 days of cardio and 1 day of strength training.  I still don't have my full endurance back, but I did notice some improvements.  I wasn't feeling nearly as winded and was able to keep a pretty constant pace of 5.3mph at Level 2 for the better part of an hour.  Working out with my trainer today was pretty tough but not intolerable.  After "taking it light" last week, we're back on track and he wasn't pulling any punches.  He did laugh when I shot him a dirty look mid-set.  (I swear he keeps adding more reps in there!)  I do notice that I'm "burning more calories" with my exercise, which is a combination of a higher heart rate from my lost conditioning and my having my watch set at my current weight.  The more fluff, the more effort it takes to move it!

Food:  This week was filled with clean eating!  The chopped salads are doing well for work, since they take up less space than the non-chopped salads.  I made an effort to eat all my meals and worked to find time during the workday to get them in there.  I did find that I often had my third meal as I was driving home.  Since we usually don't eat dinner until later in the evening, this seemed to work well for my schedule.  Friday evening, we had a friend come over to the house.  I had planned to either order in (where I would eat my own food) or cook something for everyone (where my version would be clean).  They were leaning toward going out to eat, so I decided to be flexible and enjoy the cheat meal.  Without going into too much "Food Porn" here, I really savored my dinner at the Indian restaurant and was able to eat without stressing over "clean" options or portion sizes.  Then, I had my other planned cheat
this evening - a Cadbury's Creme Egg.  (No mini eggs because we had a mouse visit our kitchen and take a liking to MY chocolate treats!)

Overall:  I continue to be happy and satisfied with my "back on track" efforts.  I think the positive news about my kidneys has also helped to re-energize me.  There's still a point to my eating clean and exercising.  I have more flexibility regarding my eating habits.  I'm back in the position of being able to have some say about what I do for myself.

Goals:  As with last week, I want to continue with my re-establishment of healthy behaviors.  I'm expecting to have my 6 workouts in for the week.  My husband starts his softball league this week, so I'll now have 2 evenings where I have a bit more flexibility with how I spend my time.  Our local minor league team is playing at home this weekend, so I'll be spending Saturday night at the ballpark.  That's most likely going to be this week's cheat meal.  They've got some pretty good options on the menu (like the chicken gyro) and it's hard to sneak in outside foods, so I'll find someway to work with it.  I do have an appointment with another kidney doctor on Wednesday, which I had previously scheduled as a second opinion.  I decided to keep this appointment, just to confirm the diagnosis and approach and to possibly ask any other questions that I may come up with.  One thing I am going to ask about is a referral to a sports nutritionist so I can learn some dietary planning approaches that will help meet my fitness needs while balancing the need for lower protein.
